Alternative internet service provider (ISP) Netomnia recently became the first network operator in the UK to activate a commercial roll-out of a 50 gigabytes per second (Gbps) fibre to the premises (FTTP) solution for business and home users.
With support from retail broadband companies Brsk and YouFibre, the alt-net has previously extended its FTTP network to cover 2.4 million residential and commercial premises in the UK, and accrued over 300,000 customers.
Netomnia’s present goal is for its network to encompass three million properties before 2025 ends, and five million by the close of 2027. The full fibre service is now available in more than 90 locations based throughout the country.
The XGS-PON technology used in the new commercial network’s infrastructure deployed by the alt-net already has the capacity of supplying symmetric speeds (identical upload and download speeds) of up to 10 Gbps. Business heads at Netomnia, however, have boldly stated that they also desire to take the title of the first network in the UK to launch internet services employing the 50G-PON technology developed by Adtran.
Group Chief Executive Officer for Netomnia, Jeremy Chelot, was available for comment on the achievement. He stated that the alt-net was constructing a fibre network for the future, proven by being the first company to roll out 50G-PON technology in the UK. He emphasised that the initiative was not only about delivering speed but also power to support advanced smart homes driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and the technology demands of modern businesses.
