What is PAT Testing?

PAT testing inspects and tests electrical appliances and equipment to make sure they’re safe to use. Testing includes a visual inspection followed by certified electrical testing carried out by an engineer.

Our fully qualified engineers use specialist PAT testing equipment to check the correct polarity of supply cables, the correct fusing, effective termination of cables and cores, and that the equipment is suitable for its environment.

Your engineer will assign each appliance the appropriate ‘pass or fail’ mark and apply the corresponding PAT test sticker to the device. Any device you repair must pass another PAT test before you can use it again.

A PAT test certificate will be issued for electrical appliances that pass the inspection as proof of compliance with safety regulations and to support your health and safety records.

FAQs

Technically, there’s no legal requirement for companies to undertake PAT testing. However, you are required to maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

While you’re not obliged to PAT-test your electricals, there are upsides to doing so.

For example, PAT testing proves to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) that you’re compliant with regulations, including:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974
  • The Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989
  • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations of 1998
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999

Plus, PAT testing shows your customers and staff that you care about their safety while helping reduce avoidable business risks.

The frequency of PAT testing and inspection depends on the type of equipment and the conditions in which it’s used. For example, a drill that’s used on a building site should be tested more often than a desktop computer. This is because most office equipment rarely moves – it’s usually kept static on a desk until it needs replacing. A power tool, however, performs a rigorous task in often challenging conditions.

Our engineers can advise on the most appropriate testing schedule based on your equipment and working environment.

We suggest you check your office equipment every two years to stay safe.
