Should you turn your PC off without performing a shut down?

At the end of a long day in the office, taking the time to shut down your PC can seem painfully slow.

This can lead many users to question whether it’s necessary, when they could easily hit the power button to turn off their machine. In this post, we’ll look at whether taking this approach is the best practice.

Why proper shut down procedures are important

Technically, a user can turn their computer off by pushing the power button, rather than using the route of start, power and shut down. However, this approach is not advisable under normal circumstances, as data loss can occur, and you may lose your work.

Microsoft designed the Windows PC shut down path so that your computer takes each step required before turning off, to ensure no such issues are encountered. For this reason, if you switch off your machine by just using the power button and restart it, you’ll see a warning that your machine did not shut down properly.

When to switch off using the power button

In certain scenarios, pressing the power button to deactivate your machine makes sense. If your computer has crashed and you are unable to interact with the onscreen options, you’ll need to restart your machine, and the only way to do so is by using the power button. If your PC will not restart or is still freezing, expert help may be required.
